August 28th Newsletter
Good morning and happy Wednesday to you! I am completely blown away by what you’ve done in the last few days. On Sunday, we asked you to take part in an effort to raise money in support of Semillas Community Ministries in San Antonio. Semillas, led by our friend John Garland, is receiving and offering vital assistance to asylum seekers and refugees who are dropped off in San Antonio by Immigration Enforcement and left to fend for themselves. Semillas is at ground zero of the national immigration crisis. Here legally, but desperately in need of protection and assistance, these folks are, as we heard Sunday morning, pilgrim people come as witnesses to the church here from the church down there. They are children of God, the church universal, our brothers and sisters.
A group of 16 DaySpringers spent the weekend in San Antonio in July, coming back inspired to be part of the ministry of hospitality and compassion for these refugees. We asked John, “What do you need the most right now? What do you need from us?" He said what he needs the most of all right now is a social worker to help them receive, counsel, and connect refugees with services available to them. I told him then that I thought we could raise $25,000 for a part-time social worker by the end of September, but didn’t think we’d be able to raise money for full time help, which is what he really wanted. I said, if you can work with part-time we’ll commit to raising the money. He agreed and we put the word out: $25,000 by the end of September, we said. While I was confident we could meet that goal, I didn’t dream that you would respond so wholeheartedly and generously, and for many, sacrificially. As of today, combining a fund raiser at Lake Shore on Friday and DaySpring’s donations and pledges, we have raised $23,718. At least one other church is going to ask their folks this Sunday to give and donations keep arriving every day. It’s clear now we’re going to meet and surpass the $25,000 goal very soon. How much more we can do is really up to you and everyone who’s joining this effort. Every dollar will go to Semillas to be available for the help they need. I’m so very proud and pleased at your response and with the communal effort being joined by individuals and churches in Waco.
We’ll post updates as they come in this week on our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ourdayspring/?ref=bookmarks
If you would like to join the effort, checks are payable to DaySpring, memo: San Antonio or donate online at https://ourdayspring.breezechms.com/give/online. Select San Antonio.
