Dear DaySpringers,

Grace and peace be with you this week. I hope your week is going well.  Here are a few notes on the life of the church for the month of October:

Beginning tonight for the next four Wednesdays, you are invited to Evening Prayer at 5:30 in the chapel. At 6 pm, I will lead Faith and the Issues: Life, Death, and Abortion. This is a tender and personal subject for some people and a passionate, engaging issue for others.  Over the next four weeks, we’ll have opportunity to survey the biblical and historical Christian witness concerning children and abortion, seek to understand why women seek abortions, study its legal status, consider related issues and alternatives, and pray together. This series will be held October 2,9,16,23. You’re invited to any or all of the sessions.

October 13 is a special day for us. It’s Covenant Day!  This year we have special guests with us.  The Purple Hulls, a sister-bluegrass-folk-acoustic duo will join us in worship and in the evening. Several of us heard them at a wedding at DaySpring in the spring and thought they were great, so we’re looking forward to having them join us. This year our All-Church Covenant Day retreat is here at the church.  The Purple Hulls will play an outside concert on the lawn beginning at 4:30. We’ll share a pot luck meal (always a treat). Our evening program will be interesting. We’ll have various ’stations’ around the church grounds to visit to learn more about the story and ministry of the church. I think you’ll enjoy this whether you know and have lived this church’s journey for years or you’re just beginning to learn what this congregation has been about.

Chart Sign ups continue. If you have not yet found your place in the ministries of DaySpring please do so in the next two weeks.  By Covenant Day we would like to celebrate a full Chart!  There’s a place for you and a place for everyone.  So far we have 52 individuals for 110 spots.  This is a good start.  Let’s keep it going. At the heart and soul of who we are is the shared love we have for the church expressed through our shared participation in the life of the church.

October 19th is the opening night of our Worship as Art Show: Fellowship. I hope you’re getting your submissions ready!  More information below on that. The opening evening will include a concert from some of our very own DaySpringers, finger foods, and opportunity to browse and reflect on the art submissions. The opening night is also a fundraiser. Inspired by our journey with Semillas in San Antonio and the journey our friend Carla has taken from Honduras to be with us, we’re asking for a robust, one-night fundraising effort to support American Gateways (http://www.americangateways.org/).  AG’s mission is "To champion the dignity and human rights of immigrants, refugees, and survivors of persecution, torture, conflict, and human trafficking through exception immigration legal services at no or low cost, education and advocacy.” We have a personal connection with AG. Many of you know Anali Gatlin Looper, our local AG lawyer. Anali is helping Carla with her asylum case pro bono. Here we have opportunity to support Anali and honor our friend Carla. What better extension and expression of Fellowship can there be but to embody encouragement and support to our brothers and sisters in need. This is love.

Please know that I am praying for you. May these events and activities bind us closer to one another and to God. Whatever else you have going on in life (and I know it’s so very much) you are in our prayers and in our love.

God’s peace,

Eric
